The Emblem of Suffering and Salvation
C alvary is where the most important event in the world took place. Truly it has impacted history like no other event before or since. It is at that crucial point of time that God, Satan, Mankind, Nature and even the very elements were decisively affected. In order to better understand what happened at Calvary nearly 2,000 years ago we must look to the Holy Bible as the written revelation of God to humanity, and the record of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
1. +++ Calvary is where all of God’s eternal attributes blend in perfection. His love, mercy and grace for His fallen creation, and His hatred, wrath and judgement against sin. Calvary is God’s Justice against sin, and His Mercy towards sinners displayed to the fullest degree.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
2. +++ Calvary is where God the Son shed His precious blood as a willing substitute for the remission of our past, present and future sins in order to take away the enmity that was between us and God.
Matthew 26:28 “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
Ephesians 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
Hebrews 9:22b “…and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Colossians 2:14“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”
3. +++ Calvary is where God showed finally and forever that the way to Him is through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Mark 15:38 “And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.”
I Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
Hebrews 9:15“And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
4. +++ Calvary is where the New Testament actually began. God’s way of dealing with mankind is no longer under the Old Testament.
II Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Hebrews 9:16 “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.”
Romans 8:3“For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh”.
Ephesians 2:8,9‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
John 1: 12 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
5. +++ Calvary is where eternal death was imputed to Satan and His angels.
Hebrews 2-14“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;”
Colossians 2:15“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”
John 12:31 “Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.”
6. +++ Calvary is where the believer’s old sin nature is crucified along with Christ, thus liberating the believer’s new nature in victory over sin.
Galatians 2:20“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 6:14 “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”
Romans 6:6“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”
7. +++ These are but a few of the many things that the scriptures reveal to us about the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary. Although this monumental sacrifice was for all men, all do not benefit from it because they have not yet repented of their vain religions and received Salvation by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is not in converting to a religion, it is only by trusting what the word of God says.
I John 5:11-13“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
At Calvary there were two thieves crucified along with Jesus Christ. Both deserved what they were getting and both were hopelessly lost. One thief chose to go along with the crowd even in his last moments and mocked the Lord Jesus Christ. He was rebuked by the other thief who saw his own wretched condition, but placed his entire faith in the King of Kings who was crucified next to Him. In the agonies of the inward and outward torture that He suffered, our Lord was gracious enough to pull Himself up on the nails in His hands and feet in order to get a breath and spoke words of comfort to the repentant sinner.
Luke 23:43″And Jesus said unto him, “Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
That thief, while unable to escape his sentence of death at the hands of the Roman government, and completely unable to do any religious works at all, in that moment received a full pardon from God for all of his sins, and he is even now enjoying the benefits of placing faith in God’s only begotten Son.
Will Christ’s great sacrifice for you at Calvary be in vain? Or will you choose to turn from your own self righteousness and trust in the Savior? Will you call on Him right now?
Romans 10:9-13“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Would you like to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior right now? If you would, then you could pray a prayer similar to this:
Almighty God, I realize that I am a sinner on my way to Hell and that I can not pay for my sins. I accept the payment that Jesus Christ made by dying in my place at Calvary. I believe that He died, was buried and rose again the third day, victorious over death. The best way I know how, I now receive Jesus Christ as my Savior. Please save my soul and give me assurance of eternal life with you Lord. Thank you for saving me. I pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
On what side of Calvary are you on?
